Gender Fluid Revolution

The concept of this post came to life through a collision of different inspirations. It started with a personal desire to expand my fashion game to a more daring artistic level. Soon enough, that craving was coupled with an interest in the gender fluid revolution impacting the fashion industry and a great discovery made by my dear friend, Jipsy. Always the curious kitty, Jipsy’s inimitable eye led her a to a gem located in Wynwood called MuseØ – and what a find it was.

As luck would have it, Jipsy was also searching to shoot something out of the norm. She wanted to capture a not-so-typical style of creativity. I, too, wanted to take a few steps outside my comfort zone and really go there. All this led to a eureka moment at MuseØ, a high fashion concept store and art gallery combo led by mastermind Bobby Ray Khasamarina.

The name MuseØ, as you might have already guessed, is a clever play on words. The website does a good job at explaining: “Museo (in both, Spanish and Italian) means museum – a place where objects of value or significance (historical, scientific, or artistic) are kept and displayed to the public. The definition of a muse is a spirit or source that inspires an artist.  With the name “MuseØ” (Ø representing the number 0) we summon creativity onto a place where art and fashion come back to “zero,” style is not defined by society, but by the Muse itself (the consumer) and the extreme western rules of gender are no longer valid.” Cool stuff, huh?

MuseØ is fabulous at finding international high-fashion and streetwear artists. For this first post, Bobby help me style a look featuring Henrik Vibskov, a Danish fashion designer; Mrs. Herskin, an accessories designer from Eastern Europe; and a headpiece by House of Malakai based in San Francisco.

“House Of Malakai began as an accessory brand focusing on bespoke head wear. His fantastical creations have become a favorite of many celebrities including Beyonce and Rihanna. The label has become a source for celebrity stylists, music videos and campaigns.”

Gender fluidity is a term being thrown around a lot lately in the fashion world. It’s a movement to break gender norms and where everything becomes unisex. Celebs such as Jaden Smith, Ezra Miller, Ruby Rose and Miley Cyrus are examples of what this is all about. Recently, Jaden Smith broke fashion boundaries as the new face for Louis Vuitton. The fashion house’s campaign featured Jaden in womenswear, including a kick-ass skirt. In all honesty, I’ve been shopping part-time in the women’s department since the age of 17. It started with the need for getting fitted jeans, but now it’s grown to fun shirts and jewelry. I find it amusing to play around with fashion and mix feminine and masculine pieces together.

The other looks gave off an edgy street style vibe and were anchored by one-of-a-kind pieces of art by London based artist Patrick Church. I had an immediate attraction to Church’s work due to his fun take on fashion icons and celebrity culture.

Before I go, I am excited to leave with you with a musical treat that complements this post. Like A Man, by my best friend Corey Michaels, is a buzz-worthy EP complete with electro-pop jams that will have you dancing for days. Aside from its addictive beats, Like A Man delivers clever lyrics that ooze with confidence as Michaels playfully commands you to “take it like a man,” and be his “cosmic lover and live in the Magic City!”

The album’s bold cover art should give you an idea that this piece of work also spotlights gender politics and fluidity. I’ve witnessed the evolution of Corey Michaels’ artistry and it’s been quite the ride. As a friend, I am so proud. And as a fan, I cannot stop dancing and singing. Congrats dahling, this is your greatest work yet. I want more!

THIS: “Make no mistake, your talent isn’t determined by other people it’s determined by your willingness to call it into existence and then own it with everything you’ve got,” Corey Michaels.
