Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens was one of the first places I ever visited when I moved to Miami more than two decades ago. As a kid obsessed with fantastical places such as the ones I had seen in The Secret Garden and Alice in Wonderland, entering Vizcaya was love at first sight! I remember it as a completely surreal experience. Memories of running through its lavish gardens and staring at the majestic barge out in the waters of Biscayne Bay are still picture perfect in my mind.

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to relish in Vizcaya’s beauty a few more times. Most recently, through a visit to the museum’s year-long “Lost Spaces and Stories of Vizcaya” exhibition, I became aware that Vizcaya will celebrate its centennial this December. Almost 100 years later, James Deering’s winter estate remains glamourous. I sigh every time I begin to imagine Deering’s life at home and his occasional soirée or two hosted in typical ‘Roaring Twenties’ fashion. It’s been said that he entertained multiple silent film stars at Vizcaya and even opened up the gardens to the public on special occasions. Nowadays, Vizcaya welcomes all. It is a great museum operated by Miami-Dade County, a prime example of Italian Renaissance and Mediterranean architecture in the U.S., and a National Historic Landmark.

Aside from engaging visitors through its arts, history and environmental educational efforts, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens offers a variety of fun events throughout the year. Just this past spring, Vizcaya hosted its annual Hat Luncheon and Seersucker Social, in addition to its delicious Tea on the Terrace. This summer, you can check out the grand opening of the Marine Garden, the “Lost Spaces…” exhibition I mentioned or cool off every weekend now through September with “Sangria Summer” at the Vizcaya Café & Shop, operated by Joy Wallace Catering (a variety of sangria and Spanish-themed tapas are available). And if you feel like yoga, then don’t miss Prana Yoga which is a 60min vinyasa class hosted every last Sunday of the month. Thinking ahead, it’s never too early to start planning for a show-stopping costume to wear at Vizcaya’s annual Halloween Sundowner on October 29.

Whether visiting Vizcaya for a fab event or to simply tour the magnificent grounds, The Mannequin Party has put together looks to make the most out of any visit. Look 1 is best suited for a dapper time at the Seersucker Social, while Look 2 is ideal for a casual summer day in the gardens sipping a Sangria. Enjoy!
