Wigwood Miami 2017

It’s not everyday we get to celebrate queerness in Miami, but the inaugural Wigwood festival definitely paved the way for us to do so more often – and in large scale. I mean, we’re talking something resembling Lady Bunny‘s wig, and that’s BIG!

Wigwood’s creators, Queef Latina and Hairy Bradshaw, along with Hialeah’s finest hosts, Juleisy y Karla, presented an epic, all-day queer festival at Gramps earlier this month. The event featured all sorts of things including performances by local bands, drag queens, DJs, film screenings, lectures, a fierce catwalk and an auction led by RuPaul’s Drag Race alum, Thorgy Thor. I loved the fun clothing and wig vendors (obvi), and the pop-up Porn Nail$ station. And special shout outs to Aileen Quintana for putting together those amazing mannequin installations and to Upper Hand Art aka Brian Butler for creating the incredible visuals (got my hands on all the merch).

Let’s get back to the queens though! I was particularly obsessed with Queef Latina’s amazing cha-cha lewk (Chiquita Banana, who?!) and Jupiter Velvet‘s hilarious Kellyanne Conway-inspired get up.

As a big fan of NYC’s club kid culture, I’m so happy that Miami’s queer scene is going public. These artists are creative and talented on many levels. Some can sing and dance; others can lip-sync for the gawds or make you gag with their make-up and outfits; and most, if not all, know how to make you seriously LOL through the art of throwing shade. Wigwood proved to be an all-around success, so the creators have promised to bring it back next year. I’m all for it and can’t wait, but in the meantime we can have fun year-round at these parties: Double Stubble at Gramps with my fave DJ HottPants or Counter Corner at The Corner.
